inexplicably long-lived "Married ... With Children" and the bland
"Jesse" — her new one is something of a gem. In "Samantha Who?,"
Applegate chinese chicago Samantha Newly, who wakes up from an eight-day coma
with TV amnesia: She's fully functional; she just can't remember who
she is.
The more she learns about the old Sam, the more appalled she is. In
"My Name Is Earl" fashion, she sets about to be a better self, with
the help and/or hindrance of her parents (Jean Smart and Kevin Dunn),
her best friend (Jennifer Esposito) and a sympathetic doorman (Tim
Russ). Barry Watson is Sam's boyfriend, and Melissa McCarthy ("Gilmore
Girls") is a loyal pal with a secret.
As with "Earl," we get glimpses of printed playing cards old Sam, who reasserts herself
from time to time and also turns up in flashbacks. As you may have
guessed, "Samantha Who?" hardly breaks new ground, but Applegate is
charming and even poignant, and car insurance are possible.
Watch it? You could do worse; Applegate has.
